Captain Toad Treasure Tracker Review | April 15, 2015
Nintendo Wii U Exclusive Title

Picture
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is rated E for Everybody and is equal parts 3D platformer and puzzle game. If you played Super Mario 3D Worlds you got a taste of what this game is like because there are several levels to play that are centered on Toad is the same style of Treasure Tracker. Captain Toad Red and Toadette Pink are out hunting stars when Wingo steals a star they found and depending on what chapter you are playing one of them will not let go of the star and is kidnapped. Now Toad sets off to find...Toad.

For a game that is a spin-off from Mario 3D Worlds Captain Toad Treasure Tracker stands on its own with some smart gameplay that is brilliantly Nintendo. Toad can’t jump in this game and that is where the puzzle elements come into play. You have to figure out how to get to the star on each level to advance. Treasure Tracker can only be played by using the gamepad controller but we have no complaints with that. It adds things that make playing interactive and the controls are very responsive. We had not control or camera issues at all, you can rotate levels 360 degrees, zoom in and out plus you can change the angle of the camera to find your way around to secret hidden items.

The stars are the main goals to finish a level but there is tons of extra stuff. There are three diamonds hidden on each stage. You need to find as many of them as you can because there are checkpoints as you move forward that require you to have a certain amount of diamonds to advance. You will also see that there is a little bonus mission at the start of each level. You have to get all of the coins or find the hidden Golden Mushroom just to name two. Treasure Tracker has only a few boss battles and they are the same bosses for each chapter but you defeat them in different ways and they keep their fun factor even if it is just playing the same boss.

We counted 100 total levels. That is including the secret coin stages that randomly show up. After you beat the three main chapters you unlock several levels you will recognize if you played Super Mario Bros. 3D worlds. There are 18 levels you get to find your way through as Toad after you beat the game. Remember Toad can’t jump in this game so it is not the same as the Mario 3D Worlds version. It took us between 12 to 17 hours to do everything. But, Treasure Tracker has Toad Amiibo support adding more stuff to do on each level. We had fun playing this game and did not want to put it down. There is not much of the story but we did find ourselves laughing a lot. The replay value is high, you will want to take the time to go back to each level and find all of the stuff and do the extra missions plus find all of the diamonds. A great simple game that is easy to pick up but hard to put down. Worth $40 easily!
