Golden Axe is a 2D action side scrolling hack and slash that takes place in a time of magic, dragons and evil sword wielding war lords. It was released by Sega in 1989 for the Genesis, Master system and Mega consoles but it was also a arcade machine around the same time and it is rated T for Teens. The King of the land of Yuria and his daughter are now in the hands of a great evil called the Death Adder. He has taken their castle and is holding them captive along with the mythical Golden Axe. The Death Adder will destroy the royal family and the Axe if the people do not bow to himm. Three warriors come forward who have each had a loved one killed at the hands of The Death Adder and his army to stop him save the royal family and reclaim the Golden Axe.

If you had a Sega Genesis instead of a Super Nintendo back in the late 1980’s to the early 1990’s then Golden Axe is a Genesis Sega game to you. But, if you were a Super Nintendo Gamer then you could only play Golden Axe in arcades. Either way each copy of the game is pretty much exactly the same. Having very fond memories of the game we were happy to find out that is just as good if not better than we remembered. There are no game mechanics issues at all. Camera and controls are even better than the original arcade game. It still looks good on a HDTV and being able to play co-op both off and online brings something new. Other modes have also been added over the years.

Golden Axe take around an hour or so to play through each time but it has a very high replay value and in many cases you can save whenever you want and start play at a different time. Whether you are fighting with swords, axes and magic or riding one of the lizard creatures you will be enjoying the game the whole time. You can find this Golden Axe on several of the Sega Genesis collections for several different console versions but you can also download for a $5 price tag. As much as we love playing Golden Axe $5 is a little high and it does not go on sale that often. Under $3 would be better and worth it for anybody who just loves video games. Your memories of finding quarters or playing on your Sega system are safe the game is still great. Take the time and find a way to discover or re-discover the original Golden Axe today.
