Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch Review | September 2, 2013
PlayStation, Nintendo DS

Picture
Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch is an updated game exclusively for the PS3 that was a Nintendo DS title back in 2010. The game from start to finish has a mix of tried and true RPG elements but it is not just a cheap knock off. If you are a fan of Final Fantasy or the Tales of series then you will find a great game that you will want to play and do all of the extra side missions without feeling like you wasted your money. The games strength is in the storyline, we found that it had a heart. Oliver's has just lost his mother and finds out there is another world where each person shares a soul with the people in his world and he might be able to bring his mother back but at what cost.

Wrath of the White Witch has this sweet somber storytelling. The story elements take several sharp plot twists and in the end makes perfect sense. So many games are missing good writing and easily relatable stories it good to see one that takes writing seriously. Wrath of the White Witch does not shy away from how one deals with losing a parent. It just makes this game stand out so much more. We wanted to get through the next combat parts just to see where things are going to go next. The voice acting is superb and the cut scenes are animated not CGI but it is done well and not annoying like some many other RPG's. The direction of the game and world has a Dark Crystal, Never Ending Story or Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy feel to everything.

Combat is action based and we had no controller or camera issues at all, as a matter of fact we had no issues in the whole game when it comes to game mechanics. We always knew where to go and what to do and were always able to switch to whatever menu we needed during combat without it getting complicated. You do switch to different menus a lot when fighting and when it comes to boss battles. There are many fun challenging boss's throughout the whole game that sometimes require some planning to defeat them. This game requires you to go out and level up to move on to the next part of the game. This works out well because there are dozens and dozens of side missions that you want to do. Too many RPG now have pointless side missions that give you useless items, not here. Side missions give you the ability to get extra experience, money, items dropped after defeating foes and orbs to keep your magic and life up during combat. All useful stuff because the game is not easy, it is in a true classic RPG style.

We attach some big name like Final Fantasy and The Dark Crystal movie to describe Wrath of the White Witch but it earned that comparison. The story takes out 40 hours to complete and if you add all of the side missions there is about another 30 to 35 hours. If you wanted to catch all of the creatures in the game then that is even more time but we didn’t (had to move on to a different game). After you beat the game more side stuff gets added in the New Game+ mode. The only real problem is that there is a lot of reading but it seems like they just ran out of time to put in voice acting when making an English version of the game. Worth a buy even at higher new game prices around the $50 to $60 dollar mark because it does everything well. Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch is money well spent for any RPG gamer or anybody who wants to try a RPG for the first time. Worth every penny, we loved every minute!
