The Wolf Among Us Review | November 25, 2014
Xbox, Windows, iOS, Android, PlayStation

Picture
The Wolf Among Us is a single player point and click adventure episodic game is the same style of The Walking Dead and Back to the Future and it is rated M for Mature. It is based around fairy tale characters and has a graphic novel look and feel. It also has deep storytelling where you have to make choices in the dialog changing how the other characters in the game behave around and toward you. The fairy tale characters have been banished from their homeland and are now living in a place called Fabletown sometime in the 1980's in New York City. A magic spell call Glamour allows many of them to look like humans and not be noticed. You are Bigby the Big Bad Wolf from the Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs story’s. He is the Sheriff of Fabletown and is trying to turn over a new leaf in his life and not always be the villain. But, people still fear him and he may not be able to change their minds even with good deeds.

The first thing you need to know about The Wolf Among Us is the story is very, very dark. It is almost sinister and downright evil what has happen to many of our favorite fables. Many of them have fallen into financial problems, substance issues and even being hired as common thugs to rough up other fable characters. Conflict between them many times turn into violent over the top battles of anger. Since they are fairy tale characters they are capable of dealing out and taking huge amounts of punishment giving the game a stronger form of combat then other games like it. The Wolf Among Us also has long well thought out boss battles that are not like anything else out there. Point and click adventures are not known for combat and boss battle elements but this game changes than. This change was needed in point and click adventures games.

What is most impressive is the storytelling. The how and why the fables are stuck in the situations they are in is based on their past stories. You don’t just get classic fairy tales like Snow White and Beauty and the Beast you get urban legends, lesser known fables and even some input from classic story’s like The Wizard of OZ. Everything is back up by great voice talent and writing, plus even though everybody in the game is larger than life, they are easy to relate to. Remember they are all dealing with the same problems as normal people do.

There are five episodes to play through each taking about 1 ½ hours. We got through the game in about 8 hours and that is about how long it will take each time through. The Wolf Among Us is designed to be played more than once for different story elements. So, replay is very high. Do you want Bigby to play it by the book or do you want him to be the Big Bad Wolf and start smacking people around until they start talking? The Wolf Among Us is worth buying at new game prices but remember it starts at under $25 already. Sales happen often giving gamers even more incentive to give this game a chance.
