Time Soldiers is a top down 2D run and gun action shooter and it has both side scrolling and bottom to top movement during gameplay. It originally hit arcades in 1987 and it is known as Battle Field in Japan. It is in the same style as the classic arcade games like Ikari Warriors and Gun Smoke. You can play in single player or two players both online or in person. You are not given a name as the main protagonists but a being named Gylend has taken your fellow Time Soldiers and trapped them in different points in time. A device called the “D-Scanner” that allows you to find where you comrades are. You are place in the wrong period of time and you must fight your way through to the right area.

Time Soldiers has fallen into the “Land of Forgotten Great Games”.  The arcade joystick turned a full 360 degrees allowing gamers to move in one direction and aim in another. Ikari Warriors and Gun Smoke both have this same system. The story is simple, fun and different for the most part when it came out. There are weapon power ups and power ups for your player to take more hits. It does have the one hit and you are dead system . We still hate one hit and you are dead but with unlimited continues without having to use quarters it is not anywhere near as bad when you die after only two minutes of gaming. We really like how there is mini bosses on each level you have to get through before you get to the right timeline to save the other Time Soldiers. It keeps things interesting and arcade boss battles in this game are all fun.

Time Soldiers in only 45 minutes to an hour long and sadly the replay is below average because it has one giant flaw. Yes, the controls are a little weird trying to use the triggers to rotate around to shoot in different directions but the main problem is that “YOU CAN’T CONTINUE ON THE LAST LEVEL!” Yep, that’s right you spend all this time trying to get to the end and if you run out of lives it is game over. Almost everything on screen that is attacking you on the last level is as strong as the mini bosses from previous levels. It just kind of losses it fun when you get to the end. It is worth paying $2.00 and under for on PlayStation Network. But it does go on sale once or twice a year for under an $1.00.
