Darksiders Warmastered Edition Review | February 17, 2018
Nintendo, Xbox, PlayStation, Windows

Picture
Darksiders is a 3D action game and it is in the same style as Devil May Cry, Bayonetta and God of War. It is single player and it is rated M for Mature. The Four Horsemen enforce the laws of The Charred Council. There is war going on between Heaven and Hell and neither side has been able to gain an advantage. The war has been going on since the beginning of time and a new third kingdom The Kingdom of Man has risen up. A truce was brokered between Heaven and Hell by the council and Seven Seals were created. The seals would only be broken when Mankind was ready to decide a winner in this never ending war. The Horsemen of War has been summoned to Earth…the final battle has started.

Darksiders almost was lost because of the original publisher that created the game THQ filed for bankruptcy in late 2012. But as luck would have it the game continued to stick around because of Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo versions being released.  Darksiders has a lot going for it in the story department and it does not disappoint. A new interpretation of the war between heaven and hell worked really well here and it leads into the other Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse storylines for other games (only one Death was available at the time of this review). War is just the first one called to Earth so hopefully we will get a ending to the entire storyline because this first game set up for several sequels perfectly.

Combat starts off slowly, it is just a lot of hack and slash and all you have to do is hit the same button over and over for the first third of the game but this however changes. New weapons, items and powers get introduced and Darksiders starts to hit its stride. Weapons have a lot of variety to them and we used them frequently. Too many games give you other weapons but they are no different or no better than the original one you start off with, not in Darksiders. As much as we liked them there is a problem with several of the projectile attacks and it has to do with the awkwardness of the controls. When it switches to the over the shoulder third person shooter we had issues trying to line up our shots and this problem got even worst during boss battles. The camera and controls issues are constant.

We also had some camera issues when we were in the underwater levels and whenever you have your back against the wall or in close quarters the camera is all over the place and it was always an issue trying to get it back into a useful position. Darksiders also has way too much backtracking for out taste. There is a fast travel system that gets introduced but still too much backtracking. We would have also like to have seen better and more puzzles early on. The puzzle solving gets so good during the second half of the game because of the items and powers you unlock but for almost half of the game it’s just attack, attack and once more attack. Darksiders has the creativity but you just have to wait for it.

Darksiders Warmastered Edition took us around 22 hours to get from start to finish and the replay value is above average. It does get really good gameplay in the second half but you may not want to play for 12 hours to get to the good part but the story is amazing and we kept playing to see how it all turns out and how it will lead into the other games because there is three other horsemen that are still entering the conflict. Darksiders Warmastered Edition is worth paying $45 for and with the updated edition you get a lot of DLC content making an even better deal. We really hope to see the other two horsemen Fury and Strife (not Famine and Pestilence) get turned into games prolonging the series! If you can find it under $15 it is a MUST BUY PRICE!
