Disgaea Hour of Darkness Review | October 12, 2013
Windows, PlayStation, Windows, Nintendo DS

Disgaea is a turn based tactical role playing is the same style as Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem. We have spent so much time playing Disgaea Hour of Darkness and we are still a little confused about some of the storylines and characters. When it comes to tactical RPG’s from Japan at times other audiences may get a little lost. Despite some of the oddness and confusion of why things are happening the gameplay is some of the best and most unique combat in this style of gaming.

The main story centers around Laharl a demon and how he wants to get his throne back. You run into several let’s just say beings on your journey (one is an angel, one looks like a vampire and one is a pig…ect). The story is a mix of fun, weird, funny, annoying and friendship. We told you the game is a little off. The voice acting is also at times weird but it is at least done very well. The main reason why we liked the game is the combat. There are several different way to attack your foes. First the game is the standard square grid style battleground. You move then attack and it is turn based. You get to use up to ten players at a time not the usual four to six like most other tactical RPGs. There are team up attacks, special attacks depending on you warrior class and magic attacks. It may sound crazy but it works and is different than any other game we have played.

There is also extra stuff like the Dark Assembly where you bribe members on congress to pass bills to unlock better weapons and new worlds to explore. There is also the item world where there is 100 randomly generated levels where there is even more things to unlock and items to find. We have not been able to count them all yet but we are close to or over the 200 different levels to play through. The main story took us between 40 to 45 hours. We have seen some other sites talking about the game being 400 hours long if you decided to do everything but we ran out of time to find out if that is true.

There is tons of unique gameplay here and that is hard to find in an RPG since most are kind of repetitive. There are some really off the wall plot points and people. Yes, there are many times where the game is just a little bit off but not in a bad way. Spending $10.00 here is money well spent but it goes on sale all the time for under $5. If you like tactical RPG's and don’t mind some of the things that get a little lost in translation then you will like this game, plus there are many games in the series. If you have never played a strategy RPG before you might want to try something else first but if you like any Disgaea game you will like them all, they all have odd story points but good combat.
