Game of Thrones by Telltale Games Review | December 17, 2015
Xbox, Windows, iOS, Android, PlayStation

Game of Thrones by Telltale is a six part episodic game that is in the same style as other Telltale games like The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead. It is the night of the Red Wedding and the House Forrester is standing with House Stark as they have been for generations. The Foresters are keepers of a special secret that makes their style of wood stronger than anywhere in the Seven Kingdoms. Ironwood is what it is called and the Whitehill family has been trying to find a way to take it for years. The Forrester family must do whatever they can to save their home of Ironrath by creating alliances however they can by marriages, deals being made in Kings Landing or even supernatural ways.

There are five playable characters in Game of Thrones. You jump back and forth between them just like the Starks in the TV series. The game takes place at the end of season 3 and ends right before the start of season 5. This is great for fans of the series but it creates two problems. First if you did not read any of the books or watch the TV series then you have no idea what some of the key elements are. You don’t understand how important the Red Wedding is to the plot of the game. You will not get who the Lanister family is or who are the Starks and why they are in conflict. On the other end if you do pay attention to Game of the Thrones then you know what happens to people from the series that you run into. You know what happens at Jofferys Wedding reception and who is involved in Slavers Bay. It creates some problems and changes you choices in way we did not like for the most part.

Telltale games are known at times to be a slower paced game, even the Game of Thrones series is very mythical with all of the back stabbing, back room deal making and politics going on. Other Telltale games like A Wolf Among Us it works very well but the slow pace of Game of Thrones makes this game at times a little boring. You spend a majority of your time just making decisions on how to best save House Forrester. Should you make a deal with this person or that person? Who should you protect and who should you make angry? The politics works well as a TV series but there is not enough action in the game. The action sequences that it does have are pretty good mostly but we had some control issues. They were to slow to respond when trying to line up targets and hit the right button at the perfect time.

Game of Thrones by Telltale Games took us around 12 hours to get through. There are six chapters and each takes about two hours. We really like the jumping back and forth between storylines and even with the game being to slow for us, we believe that there is good replay value. You want to go back through and make different choices and find out if you allied yourself with a different person or family how the story would play out. The voice talent is amazing both from the new people and actors from the show. Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell), Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Snow) all lend their voice to the game. Game of Thrones by Telltale Games is worth paying $30 for and we are assuming that they will be other games.
