Marvel Ultimate Alliance Review | April 17, 2017
Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4

Marvel Ultimate Alliance is an action adventure top down RPG; it is the unofficial sequel to X-Men Legends I & II. They just expanded to the entire Marvel roster and not just to X-Men members. This was a 2007 release for PlayStation 2, Xbox and Gamecube systems at the time. So, online play was limited on those systems but the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions added online play and some additional characters like Moon Knight and Colossus. Now you can get it on you PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. You can play in single player or multiplayer up to four gamers. The S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier is under attack from Dr. Doom and is army of Ultron Warriors. Fury sends out a call to all Super Heroes for help.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance has some big shoes to fill since the X-Men Legends games are one of the few game series to break the “Terrible Super Hero Video Game” cycle. X-Men had great gameplay and fun storylines to play through. Ultimate Alliance thankfully keeps the streak alive. Doom is the main villain and he has gotten the loyalty of dozens of Super Villains and they are calling themselves the Masters of Evil. With this much variety with the villains the amount of powers you can combine with your team is awesome! If you ever wanted to take on Spider-Man’s main foes with the Fantastic Four…you can. If you want to take on Sabretooth with Luke Cage you can. Or, Wolverine vs. Bullseye just put them in your group and get your Meta-human smack down on. Great use of powers in this game, we are very happy.

Choosing who you take with you in your 4 person team carries some weight whether it be in a single player mode or up to 4 player co-op. Depending on your team you get little bonuses. Some will give you extra XP or increase you power by 10% and some will give you stronger attacks or even greater recovery allow you to use your powers more. We love changing out team often and for some reason changing their costumes.  There are also power ups bonuses if two or more members attack a foe with a super power at the same time. All these little things keep you playing and wanted to find all of the playable characters. Great use of not only powers but level design the whole game. We always wanted to keep a flyer, someone super strong, someone with projectile attack and a melee attacking with us at all times because how you can use them on all of the different levels. We never got bored with the powers.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance took us almost 15 hours to get through the first time and amount of gameplay will remain the same each time you play through. You are most likely going to want to play this game more than once. Take the time to find the pieces of the Ironman suit to unlock Tony Stark or find of the comic books and training disks hidden all over the place. All of these little things along with the combat, puzzles and quick time events keeps you interested. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is worth paying $19.99 for and if you find it on sale under the $9.99 it is a Must Buy Price. We are so glad to see a world where super hero game are not just all terrible anymore.
