Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Review | July 7, 2013
Xbox, iOS, PlayStation

Marvel vs Capcom is a 2D fighter that has single player and mutiplayer options. Long before mashups hit the music scene Marvel vs Capcom showed us how amazing mixing two different things can be. The first game in the series came out in arcades in 1998. The game was the next step after X-men vs Street fighter came out two years earlier in 1996 and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter in 1997. With three games under their belt Capcom made a game that many still believe is the best 2D fighter or overall fighter ever, Marvel vs Capcom 2. This game expanded the amount of fighters to choose now that you could choose several fighters from the Capcom and the Marvel library of characters. It will not matter what kind of gamer you are you will like this game.

The fighting is three on three tag in and tag out combat. You get to choose from over 50 fighters, most you have heard of and a few from the Capcom side that we had no idea who they were. The game adds air combos and of course super giant over the top team combos that could take almost all of your opponents hit points in one shot, leaving the fighting to three on two. The art style is based on the 1990’s animated series and it sounds like all of the original voice actors do lend their talent to the game. Maybe we are a purest but Wolverine belongs in yellow and black and Storm belongs in silver.

The game has great balance during gameplay. If you and your friends are great 2D fighters and you memorizes move after move then you will be just as comfortable as the old fashion button masher who has never played the game. Even the greatest Marvel vs. Capcom 2 fighter could lose to the person who just hits the same two buttons and moves the controller around to hit combos by accident. Balance is also the way we would describe each of the fighter in the game. Besides Dan of course (Dan is always weaker) from Street Fighter there is no one character that is better than the other. If you really like Jill from Resident Evil than you could practice and become a dominate player. That rule works right across the board from Dr. Doom to Zangief.

We pick up and play this game a lot. We know that “The Best Fighting Game of all Time” is mostly a matter of opinion but many times when people talk about the fighting games they love the best Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is usually in their top five or top three. The game is still worth paying $15.00 for but the good news is that it goes on sale often for dirt cheap. When we say cheap we mean even as low as under $3.00 during a Black Friday sale and under $5.00 during other times. This is a game you want to have in your collection especially if you grew up playing Street Fighter, Fatal Fury or Tekken.
