Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare Review | May 1, 2013
Xbox 360, Xbox Arcade, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Network

A western game is unique enough as it is but add a zombie element and some other supernatural creatures roaming around and you have something that is different in an overcrowded zombie game market. Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare is an open world 3rd person shooter that does not use a cover system at all. Most of the combat is in a large open space so you must play the game as a on the move run and gun shooter and it is outstanding the whole way through. Trying to move and aim at the same time is not easy unless you are one of those freakish super coordinated people. For the rest of us the aim assist is spot on 99% of the time making combat easier and much more fun.

The story does feel like a modern day western. John Marston returns home only to have his wife and son get bitten by what appears to be the undead on his first night back. He ties them up and locks down his house and goes to find out what is happening and how to fix it. The game has a nice mix of bizarre oddballs and serious no nonsense Clint Eastwood types as John travels on horseback from town to town (traveling on a horse from town to town is more fun than expected) learning of possible reasons for the zombie hordes and hopefully a cure. For as many different characters the game has the voice acting is spot on. Some are funny and most are serious but everybody feels sincere and not to over the top unless being over the top is the point.

Red Dead Redemption took us about 15 hours to get through the first time and that is with a 100% game completion rate. A few complaints here and there aiming is off but is fixed by using auto aim, replay value is a below average and at times it is a little repetitive. Undead Nightmare is technically a add-on to Red Dead Redemption but an good add-on. You can buy it as a standalone game also but keep your price under $20.00
