Alan Wake Review | October 17, 2012
Xbox, Windows

Picture
Alan Wake is far different than most other games. While most 3rd person action survival horror games are rated M for Mature and many times just filled with pointless blood and guts, Alan Wake shows how you can scare an audience with more than just violence. The story, writing and plot are by far one of the best we have ever played and maybe the best story driven game on the Xbox 360 ever. A book that Alan Wake clearly wrote is starting to come to life for real but he does not remember writing it in the first place. As he tries to figure out what happen to him there are moments when the town he is in in nothing but darkness. His only real weapon against the darkness is to shine light onto the evil.  Alan must find a way out of the dark place and save his wife, who goes missing.

Alan Wake has found success as a author but he is now in the middle of a case of terrible writer’s block and it is causing problems with Alice his wife. They decide to take a vacation as far away from New York City as they can, a small town named Bright Falls. A town that is so remote that you can only get there by ferryboat or plane. This is a run and gun style of shooter with one key difference, light is a weapon against shadow people called The Taken. The way light is used as a weapon to remove the darkness before you can attack with normal weapons if engaging and smart. The whole game is Light vs Dark.

It took us around 15 hours to beat the game the first time through. We spent a lot of time trying to find the hidden manuscript pages of the book that are scattered all through the Bright Falls. The replay value is extremely high, one of the highest replay values we have found. For a game that you have to be fast on the controller and make quick adjustments we had no issues at all with the controls. Camera works great and aiming and moving are smooth but Alan does look odd when he runs. Worth every dime and sales happen often for both PC sites and Xbox. Many PC sites have the game DRM free also. Alan Wake is easily one of the best survival horror games we have ever played and is in the argument for the best Xbox 360 video game ever made. Must own for all gamers!
