Resident Evil 6 Review | January 27, 2013

When you try to make everybody happy, nobody likes you. Resident Evil 6 try’s to add survival horror, melee fighting, military combat shooter and a co-op zombie game all into one game and screws them all up at the same time. This game is loaded with problems from start to finish. Let’s start with the worst; the camera and aiming are horrible in every possible way. The camera is constantly moving in and out and is never in the right spot. It is almost always to close and you can’t see what you are attacking. The camera gets worse when you are forced to use the useless melee fighting that they try to force on you. You are constantly attacking at the air and missing your target. This is one of those games that the camera is so bad it ruins most of the game and makes it unplayable at times and it makes us feel sad for Leon and Chris.

There are several areas where you will be driving some sort of vehicle and most of them don’t work. This game made riding on a snowmobile frustrating in one section and the next time the controls work fine. The levels where the computer is driving and all you have to do is shoot does work better but then you are back to the useless camera and constant aiming problems. The controls are messed up to. You have to run with the left thumb stick but you also have to change weapons with your left hand to, you can’t do both. If you were born with two left thumbs you will be fine. There are several parts in Resident Evil 6 where you walk into a room there is a cut screen and then you die. You have no idea why you died or how to prevent it. The dying for no reason gets worst when driving or you need to run from something and the only thing you can do is guess until you get lucky and move the right way or stop at the right time.

We are still not done complaining about Resident Evil 6. The screen is way too dark, you can’t even see what you are shooting at or who or what is shooting at you. Capcom also adds in this tripping over bodies’ thing which is stupid and makes it even harder on the camera and aiming. You will trip over a zombie on the ground but not boxes or garbage cans. There is a different interface menu for each storyline so making adjustments takes way too long and it takes place in real time.  So if you want to make a change you keep getting attack as you try to find the right menu. Some of the dialog is drowned out by what is going on in the action parts and every single gun take way too long to reload and finally no files to find at all, thats right very light on story elements.

There are only a few good things to say. Resident Evil 6 has intersecting storylines like Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil Code Veronica. You can choose from any of the four playable characters to start and play them in any order which we did like. The cut scenes CGI are some of the best we have ever seen on any system.  The storyline and dialog all make sense and the voice acting is remarkable. The things we loved the most are the introductions of the new characters and the return of some old ones. Our favorite was Sherry Birkin from Resident 2. She is now in her mid to late twenties and has joined the fight against the outbreak that is going on. She also still has some side effects of what happen to in Resident Evil 2 and this is added into the story. This game had perfection written all over if it was done right. If you were just to watch the CGI movie scenes you would think Resident Evil 6 was one of the best games of the year but the gameplay makes it a well below average. Resident Evil 6 is about 25 hours long the first time through. Even though there is a lot of game to play the replay is very low because of the camera and aiming issues that happen over and over. This is barley a $15 to $20 game but not by much.
