Resident Evil Director's Cut Review | October 27, 2012
PlayStation, Windows, Nintendo

Resident Evil is a 3rd person survival horror zombie shooter and it is rated M for Mature. It is the first game in the series and has the same style of Resident Evil 2 and 3. It was originally a PS1 game in 1996 but it was also released for the Sega Saturn. The STARS Bravo team has been sent to Raccoon City because of reports of people being killed and even eaten in some cases. After a short period of time the Bravo team stops responding to communications and the Alpha team is sent in. Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, Barry Burton and Albert Weasker are sent in when they are chased into a giant mansion by rabid dogs. After finding members of the missing team inside the mansion they now must find out what is going on in Raccoon City and what happen to Bravo team.

The first Resident Evil game is so popular and so good that the original game has been remade not once but twice with better graphics and new storyline elements added. The controls are spot on with a very good auto aim making it easy to hit your target. The early Resident Evil games used a fixed camera system where the angles only change when you step out of frame. It is still missed by most gamers who grew up playing the early versions of Resident Evil. This did at times create issues, for example if you started to aim and it put out of the cameras range then it would switch on you. It was a minor problem that you just learned to live with. The fixed camera also created a sense of being watched. You could hear noises but until you walked around the corner or stepped into the next room you could not find out where the noise was coming from. Once again a peace of gaming that we still miss.

Resident Evil took us about 10 hours to get though the first time and it has a high replay value for all gamers. There are several different endings but the replay comes from the New Game+ mode where you will get a weapon with unlimited ammo for the next time you decide to play. If you got into Resident Evil after Resident Evil 4 then you are missing out on how the whole thing started. Resident Evil 1, 2, 3 and Code Veronica have this same style of game play. You should own them all because they are so spot on. The $10 price is a bit high. It seems even higher when you take into account that you can get the HD remake that came out in early 2015 for $20. Under $5 is a much better price for the game and it does go on sale for around that price several times a year. But, if you spent hours playing this game on  your PS1 or Sega Saturn back in the day then you will not be disappointed pay $10 because it is still just as good if not better than you remember.
