Super Mario Bros. 2 Review | July 17, 2013
Nintendo Exclusive Title

Super Mario Bros. 2 is a 2D platformer. So if we remember right Mario is one of the top five most recognized symbols in the world. During the early Nintendo Entertainment System days the original Super Mario 2 was deemed too difficult and Nintendo was worried that American and European audiences would not like the game, Nintendo instead took a different 2D platformer called Doki Doki Panic and added Mario and company to it and released it as the sequel. This game hit store shelves back in 1988 on the NES. Even though it is somewhat not a normal game in the Mario series it still does some good things and is fun.

For flashback reasons playing this game made us want to watch the Back to the Future Trilogy and bust out our RUN DMC greatest hits album. Is it still fun mostly, yes there is some classic level design here like an ice and sky levels and for some reason there are some rocket ships too. This is a 2D platformer and that’s it. There is no RPG elements, stuff to buy but the game does not feel like it is missing anything. We do like that there are hidden ways through the levels and certain boards require you to walk off screen to the right or left and end up on the other side. We don’t get to see a lot of games like that. We also like that there is not clock so you can take your time and explore everywhere.

The game is missing two important things, you can’t jump on the head of your foes to destroy them and there is no Fireball Flower Power in the game. We as humans are current not able to throw fireballs from our hands and we have been living out that dream through Mario. Plus, Super Mario Bros 2 is harder than other games in the series. Sometimes too hard and you don’t want to play for a while and its really short. You could play from start to finish in less than 1 ½ hours. $5 is cheap for any video game, but this game has a yes and no answer if it is worth it. If you grew up playing the game then buying it for that price is worth it just for reasons of remembering a simpler time. If you have never played the game then you could be thinking that the game is not worth it. Some of us still have our Super Nintendo or Wii copy of Super Mario All-Stars so we don’t have to make that decision but try the demo first if you can.
