The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Review | May 17, 2014
Xbox, iOS, Android, PlayStation, Nintendo

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a open world action game in the same style as the Batman Arkham series. Peter Parker is looking for the man that killed his Uncle Ben. As his search continues he is pulled into conspiracy. His friend Harry Osborn is now running Oscorp his father’s company and has entered into a deal with Wilson Fisk aka the Kingpin to create a city wide security force to help the police deal with the crime problem happening in New York City. The security force however spends a lot of time going after Spider-Man and not stopping the crimes going on in front of them, hunting Spider-Man seems to be their plan.

There has been so many bad video games with superhero names attached to them you would hope developers would have learned from their mistakes but The Amazing Spider-Man 2 “is just another terrible game with a superhero name!”  Right from the start you notice how awful the camera is and how sloppy the controls and aiming are. The game mechanics destroys any enjoyment you could have had while playing. The camera is jerky and is always out of position and most of the time you can’t see who you are fighting or who is attacking you. Fighting at times is fun but only if you move the camera because it does not self-adjust. You spend a lot of time fighting the air and then you lose your combo bonus because you can't see what you are doing. The camera and controls make websling a chore and it is at time pointlessly difficult and the city looks nothing like New York. Boss battles had some potential but once again useless camera, non-responsive controls and bad aiming take out all the fun.

The entire game has no real plot to the story and there is no underlining theme. You just feel like they recklessly throw super villains at you with no real reason why they are there and then they are just removed from the game and story without explanation. This happens several times and it just feels like you are doing bad side missions or weak challenge maps and not playing through the games storyline. There are crimes going on all over New York and if you want to keep Kingpins security forces at bay then you need to clean up the city. The more crimes you stop the more the city looks at you as a hero but if you don’t stop enough crimes then Spider-Man starts to get blamed for everything bad that is happening. The problem is that of the crime stopping side missions are boring, pointless and you are just doing the same thing over and over. There are only six different side missions to do; stop thugs, rescue people from a fire, car chase, rescue civilian, throw a bomb into the river and police standoff. The game just repeats the same missions and they even use the same animations. They are boring and the game asks you to do them dozens of times. There are RPG power ups to buy but most of them make no impact.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a horrible with a few good points. The voice acting is good even though the story is bad and we did like to see The Black Cat, Shocker and Carnage. You have to find several of Spider-Man costumes and you have to use stealth to sneak into the place where they are hidden. For some reason the camera issues are not as much of a problem when trying to unlock a new costume. Each costume has different powers to level up and it is fun to try them all out. You also get to use your camera to take pictures unlocking new storyline info and missions. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took us between 5 and 7 hours to beat and that is really short on gameplay. The replay value is really low because of the camera, controls and pointless storyline. Unfortunately the game is only worth $15.00 or less because “it is just another terrible game with a superhero name!”
