Alan Wake The Writer DLC Review | May 5, 2014
Xbox, Windows

Picture
Alan Wake is far from your typical video game. It has one of the best stories we have ever played through and it is one of the few survival horror games that are rated T for Teen. Spoiler!! At the end of Alan Wake you save you wife from the Darkness that has invaded the town of Bright Falls but Alan had to stay behind trapping himself inside the Dark Place. Alan Wake has six total episodes, the first four deal with him trying to find his wife Alice and deal with the people in the town who think he is why she is missing and the weird stuff happening in the town. The other two The Signal and The Writer are DLC packs dealing with Alan being trapped and trying to find his way back to the light.

The Writer picks up directly where The Single leaves off. Alan now realizes that he is the one causing all of these problems. He is not just trapped inside the Dark Place but the irrational part of his mind is what is keeping him there. All of the things that are attacking him are being created by Alan as figments of his imagination. Barry is also a guide that Alan has created in his head to tell him where to go and what to do. Thomas Zane also returns he is real and has been imprisoned in the dark place for years but there is still hope to free Alan from this place. The floating words returns as part of this DLC but they are not as much of a focus like in The Signal. Once more no issue with the camera or controls and the aiming is spot on all the time. If you are having any trouble it is because you are doing something wrong and it is not because of the game. This is the sixth and final chapter of Alan Wake story not including the American Nightmare game. Alan must find a way to get to the part of his mind that is causing all of the trouble and finally find a way out of the Dark Place.

The Writer DLC is easier than The Single, mostly because there are more checkpoints and better flashlights and weapons are found earlier in the game and there are several traps all over the landscape to help you defeat the taken. There is no carry over from previous game saves either. So if you have not played The Single you can still play The Writer and understand this DLC. Even though you don’t need to play The Single we do recommend that you buy and play it first because you get a little more out of the story. The Writer DLC for Alan Wake took us a little over 2 hours to play through the first time. It is less than The Single but replay is higher because it is more fun. This is a must buy for any fan of the Alan Wake series and it is worth paying the $7 dollars for. The best thing we can tell you is that all both games Alan Wake and Alan Wake American Nightmare and both DLC packs The Single and The Writer go on sale all the time. You can get all four for a price under $20 several times a year.
