Resident Evil Code Veronica Review | May 27, 2013
Xbox, PlayStation

Picture
Resident Evil Code Veronica was the first in the series not to be on a PlayStation platform. It was originally released on the Sega Dreamcast in 2001 as an exclusive title. The game takes place after Resident Evil 2 where Clair ends the game by telling Leon she still needs to find Chris. It is still made in the traditional old way. The game has fixed camera angles that change depending on where you go and does not change unless you move out of range, then it switches to another camera. We were worried that this title was going to fall into “The Realm of Forgotten Great Games” but being able to download it on a PlayStation and Xbox system plus having a HD upgrade still shows this game has got life in it even if you have never played it.

Code Veronica start out with Claire Redfield looking for her brother Chris in a Paris Umbrella facility only to be caught and imprisoned on Rockfort Island which is owned by the Umbrella Corporation. She is released by a wounded guard and runs into Steve Burnside who was also a prisoner. There is only one goal, escape the island. This game plays a little more like the Resident Evil 2 zapping system. This means what you do when you are playing Claire directly effects how you play as Chris. If you save a person with Claire they show up to help Chris. If you use all of your arrows when playing Chris, then Claire has no arrows to use. We recommend using the bow gun in Claire’s storyline because she is shorter and the darts will hit the targets better. Since Chris is taller many times the darts will shoot over the zombie’s shoulders while with Clair they will always hit them square in the chest, shoulders or head.

This game was almost missed because of the short lived Sega Dreamcast. It is one of the best Resident Evil game out there and one of the best old style of 3rd person shooters. The fixed camera angles work 99% of the time while keeping the suspense of what you can’t see lurking around every corner. The auto aim makes focusing on targets easy and you still get cool boss battles throughout the game. When we say old style we mean it, no weapons to upgrade or ammo or health to buy. You have to scavenge around and conserve your supplies because if you run out, you are out.

We were glad to see this game get a HD release and for some reason it is not as well-known as some of the other Resident Evil games even through it is outstanding. Lots of replay and the game takes around 20 to 25 hours to beat the first time because there is a lot of places to explore and the puzzles are challenging. This game is easily worth spending the $20 price tag for a download. The good news is that you can even get it for $10 or under sometimes during sales and at that price it is a must buy even if you have never played a Resident Evil Game or you don't like shooters.
