Super Smash Bros. Wii U Review | December 27, 2014
Nintendo Wii U Exclusive Title

Picture
Smash Bros Wii U is a multilevel 2D fighter and a Nintendo exclusive title. This version Smash Bros is only available on the Wii U. You can play single player, co-op or up to 8 players both on and offline. This is the fifth game in this very popular series. You get to choose between 50 characters, most are available at the start and some you need to unlock throughout the game. Smash Bros has multiple different fighting modes like Special Smash where you get create your own rules to Group Classic and Classic Mode where you get to play how the game was when it was originally released on systems like the Nintendo 64 and GameCube. Smash Bros for the Wii U has a very strong focus on co-op and multiplayer but we miss playing some of the single player options that were available in earlier version of the game.

How did we ever live without Smash Bros. The Wii U version has many different modes to try out. By far our favorite is 8 player Smash! Having 8 different Nintendo characters on screen at the same time battling it out is gorgeous chaos! Just nonstop combat and we just wanted to keep playing in this mode. Sometimes you lose your fighter on screen in 8 player Smash but it is no big deal.  You can create your own rules and your own stages plus there are 140 different challenges to find in the game and complete. There is also a mode called Smash Tour. It is like a board game where you roll dice and collect power ups to use against other fighters. You have to play to better understand it.

The big push here is the introduction of Amiibo and the interaction that comes from being able to use several different controllers for the game. The Amiibo is something that you are either going to think is cool or you will feel like it is gimmicky and not for you. Being able to create your own fighter and customize your fighter’s moves to your preference and then take it with you to battle others is something we would like to see in more fighting games. We did like the controller options the most. You can use the gamepad, Wii U pro controller, Wii Remote Plus, Wii Remote Plus/Nunchuk, Wii Remote Plus/Classic Controller Pro and the a your own GameCube controller. You do need to buy an adapter for your Wii U to use the GameCube controller. You can also buy a bundle that has the controller, adapter and game. We used the Wii U pro controller mostly but what controller depended mostly on personal preference and not game mechanics. All of the controllers worked like you would hope they would, we no real issues.

There is not much to complain about besides there is no real story elements at all. You defeat the game with a fighter in single player and you just get a little cut scene and that is it. There is no reason to play single player besides practicing you moves and you can unlock some stuff.  We wish they could have done another little Space Embassy 2D platformer with another storyline to play but it is minor. You will spend hundreds of hours playing Smash Bros for the Wii U if you like this type of game and it is worth buying right now even at a new game price. We still just wish there was some type of story $60.
