Super Smash Bros. Brawl Review | March 5, 2013
Nintendo Exclusive Title

Nintendo puts together another great fighting game and a 2D side scrolling platformer as well with Super Smash Bros. Brawl. For the longest time most fighting games were either so complicated that nobody new could try to get into the series or they were filed with pointless violence. Then there were the games that were not any fun to play with no real storyline. Super Smash Bros. changed all of that. Nintendo has made fighting games fun again. You can play up to four players but playing with less is still fun. For a Wii game it looks outstanding and we were surprised since the Wii is not in HD.

Nintendo did not just give you a fighting game. There is a 2D full platform action adventure game included call The Subspace Emissary. The part we loved the best is it brings all the members of the Nintendo Universe together fighting side by side against a common enemy. It starts with Mario but soon you will have several players from the game teaming up to find out what is attacking their world. You jump from team to team and story to story until all groups end up together where you get to find your way through a maze. You get to pick four characters from the whole roster to use to fight your way to the end. The side game is so good and adds a additional storyline element to the game that many other fighting games are missing. It has about 15 to 20 hours of to go through. Plus playing The Subspace Emissary will unlock more fighters to us in the game.

The only real problem is that there is no voice acting but during The Subspace Emissary story mode it does not hold the game experience back and the controls are a little slow to respond sometimes in both games. Many times you turn to attack your opponent and you attack before you turn causing you to just swing at nothing. It might just be a limit with the Wii because we have had this problem with other Wii game before. You do have to adjust your gameplay because of the controls but it is minor. When this game came out it was the only one out there like it. It could be still one of the best 2D fighting style game. We do have a problem with the price. Even today you see this game for $50 or higher at stores or even online. The game is fun and has a high replay factor but don’t spend more than $40.
