Super Mario Galaxy 2 Review | December 10, 2013
Nintendo Exclusive Title

For many people you either love the Nintendo Wii or you did not like the controller and therefore you did not like the Wii. Super Mario Galaxy 2 uses the same style of controls from the first game but it  fixes many of the 3D platforming issues and for many people it is the best video game every made for the Wii. We loved every second we spent playing this game and you should own it if you own a Wii or now a Wii U. Bowser has taken the princess, we already know that. You don’t just play as Mario you can also be Luigi for some missions and levels. There are seven total Galaxies, six in the main storyline and one secret world that gets unlocked after you beat the game. The secret world revolves around some of the people from the first Mario Galaxy game. You get to travel around on a spaceship that looks just like Mario’s head. The further you get in the game the more passengers you start to pick up including our favorite Yoshi.

There are three main strengths of the game. First, the variety of the gameplay, second several really great new power ups and third very smart and wonderful boss battles that you want to just replay over and over. There is a nice mix of both 2D and 3D platforming with some anti-gravity fun added in. Each time you go to a new world the game adds something different. You get some traditional 2D platforming, some 2D platforming where half the level you are on the ceiling, there are racing challenges, 3D levels where you are floating the whole time, 3D platforming and some time trials where you have to get something done in a period of time in order to defeat the level.

The new power ups fit perfectly with this game. The new cloud Mario where you get to create clouds to jump on to or over things and drill Mario where you dig your way through the planet in order to go forward were the ones we liked the most. There are others but you have to play the game to understand them. In many cases you are required to have the right power up to defeat the bosses. Even the ones that don’t need any special power ups are great too. Nintendo did not just recycle all the old bosses from the first game. There are many different ways you need to figure out how to stop them and even where you run into ones you have already defeated there is still something different that needs to be done in order to win. Even fighting Bowser is different from all other final bosses in the game and they are never boring, they are always fun.

The controls and platforming are a lot better than the first game but still some minor problems. It mostly comes from the nunchuk thumbstick not being rounded. You think you are jumping on something but you can’t move in that direction because the thumbstick is stuck in a corner. The water and ice worlds are much better compared to the first game but they are still a little off. Over all we loved this game. Even when we got stuck we keep trying over and over to get to the next part. This could be the best game ever created for the Wii. There is a good 20 hours your first time through and the game has a very high replay value because some levels are just so much fun you keep replaying them. Go buy it and don’t worry about paying a full price for the game, you will love it!
