Super Mario Galaxy Review | December 7, 2013
Nintendo Exclusive Title

Since Super Mario went 3D, Nintendo has put out great game after great game. In Super Mario Galaxy it takes the 3D platfroming to a whole different place and still there are not any games out there like it. This game is a 2D platformer, 3D platformer, 2D side-scroller and 3D side sidescroller all at the same time. The game jumps from each style flawlessly and adds some levels where you are upside down and sideways. Mario and his supporting friends once again must rescue Princess Peach from Bowser after he takes her during a celebration. Bowser does not just take her but the entire castle to. Mario wakes up on different planet and meets Rosalina and the Lumas. Bowser has also taken Rosalina Power Stars which she uses to run the Comet Observatory and watch over the universes. Without the stars the observatory has not power and Mario must retrieve them to save the universe and Princess Peach fast.

As we were playing this game we were surprised on how great the controls are. The controller and Nunchuk work very smooth almost all of the time. This is not something that we normally say about Wii games but Super Mario Galaxy shows how great a game can be if the controls are made to enhance the experience and not define the game. It runs into some problems with the thumbstick because it has angles instead of a circle. The other control issue was during water levels mostly, every part of the game that had a level where you needed to go under water was a disaster. A 2D/3D/side scrolling platforming game is complicated enough but Nintendo also adds in anti-gravity elements and changing gravity fields. It does not miss a beat the whole time.

The game has some outstanding and very unique boss battles and each world is different. You look forward to fighting Bowser and his allies. You never feel like you are just playing a level that you have already done. There are also many optional worlds to explore adding more gameplay. The whole point is to collect stars and if you get 120 stars you can replay the game using Luigi. There is a tone of replay in this game and our first time through took us 15 to 17 hours. The game should be owned and played by all Nintendo Wii owners. We don’t know how Nintendo pulled it off but WOW did they create something really different with their biggest icon. Looking forward to more Galaxy games!
