Rayman Origins Review | September 17, 2013
Xbox WIndows, OS X, PlayStation, Nintendo

It’s good to see that a classic style 2D platformer can still be fun and worth playing. Rayman Origins brings the PS1 and Nintendo 64 favorite game series to a whole new audience with great graphics and the same humor that we remember from the series. Rayman has always been funny at a time where humor in games were hard to find. Mix in so fun unique characters, outstanding game play and you have something that can be considered one of the best games you can invest your time. We love many of the original games we were very happy to see that the updated Rayman was just what we wanted.

When the PS1 and the Nintendo 64 came out they introduced 3D gaming and 2D games were ignored by not only developers but gamers too. The increase of indie video game makers started to show that not only can classic 2D side-scrolling platformers be relevant but they can also be ground breaking. In Rayman Origins you can play in single player or up to four players with a drop in drop out format. You get to choose from being Rayman, Globox or two different Teensies. This game runs the gauntlet when it comes to the speed. You get to go slow and take your time while you explore every part of an area. Then there are the levels that you run for your life and all of your jumps must be perfect or you will die because something is chasing you. It does not matter which you are playing they are all good and the controls and camera are perfect all game long.

There are no time limits and you have no lives, so you don’t have to worry about running out of chances. This comes into play when you are taking on the outstanding boss battles. Taking on the final bosses at the end of each section is the best thing about the game. They are all so different and unique and have you wanting more of them after you beat the game. If you are new to Rayman you will notice the great use of humor but if you are a lifelong gamer from the PS1/Nintendo 64 days you will find out that the game is still funny if not funnier than you remember. We love everything about this Rayman Origins, the music, sound effects, even the crazy difficult final level and boss. The final level is a challenge so don’t say you were not warned. It took us around the 12 to 15 hour mark to get through the game but there was still more to do, we just ran out of time. This is a game you will replay over and over again and want to find all of the secrets. This is an easy buy even at higher new game prices like $40 but it goes on sale all the time for under $10 or even $5 so keep it in mind if you see it.
