Dead Space 2 Review | October 17, 2013
Xbox, Windows, PlayStation

Dead Space 2 is a third person survival horror shooter. It is the direct sequel to Dead Space and it is in the same style of that game and other games like Gears of War and Resident Evil 6. Dead Space might just be our favorite survival horror series. Overall it has a great plot of why things are happening and breaks away from the 3rd person modern day military shooter that so many other game are doing. Once more The Marker is destroying people’s minds, making them go insane and become exceedingly violent. Isaac Clarke is now in a mental hospital on Titian station on one of Saturn’s moons. Now three years later after escaping the Ishimura how can there be a Marker since Isaac destroyed it and how did they build another one? Did they not learn the first time what the Marker does when people get to close to it?

The first thing that you need to know is that everything that you liked or would like from the first game is here. The action is intense and almost overwhelming. Wave after wave of the creatures called Necromorphs are coming at you from every angle. The controls, camera and aiming are flawless, we had zero issues with game mechanics. The game has great scenes that will make you jump and you never know when it will happen. You do spend part of your time back on the Ishimura from the first game and it is creepy and uncomfortable to see the ship being repaired, covered in plastic and abandoned. All of the weapons from Dead Space are here and some new ones. So if you had a preference from the first game you will still be able to use it.

The big change is that now Isaac Clarke talks and his interaction with people. Early on you are being contacted by a fellow mental patient named Stross who claims he can destroy The Maker but he is very unstable. Then you find Ellie Langford the last survivor from her group and a pilot. Many of the moments that send you in a direction are hallucinations Isaac keeps having about his dead girlfriend Nicole Brennan. Saving her was the whole reason Isaac went to the Ishimura in the first place. Isaac does not know if she is helping him or using him but the hallucinations just keep coming. The new elements in combat are first you have to stomp on the necromorphs after you kill them. This will give you credits, ammo and life packs. You could shoot them but it is a waste of ammo and it is fun to just step on them. Many parts of the game you have to crawling into the vents to get around the station and you don’t have anti-gravity boots this time you have rocket boots. You spend parts of the game flying around and it is intense and not overdone and sometimes it is during some type chase scene.

Problems were small. We did like the anti-gravity boots in the first Dead Space. We wish they could have found a way to put some of that gameplay in Dead Space 2. You lose a little bit of the feeling of claustrophobia from the first game too, this is because you are usually in wide open areas and not walking down narrow ship hallways. Some of the new creatures are a little weak and the game always gives you ammo to weapons that you don’t have and cannot even buy yet. This is an outstanding game over all. Even the way it starts is very impressive and it takes some chances with the camera to sell the action. It keeps you at all times looking around for the next creature. Dead Space 2 takes about 10 to 12 hours to finish the first time through but it has the highest of high replay value. Easily worth spending your money even at $60 on Dead Space 2 and could be even better than the first Dead Space at times.
