Dead Space Extraction Review | October 7, 2013
Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3

Picture
Dead Space Extraction is a first person arcade style survival horror rail shooter. The first Dead Space was one of the best 3rd person shooter and survivor horror games we have ever played. Dead Space Extraction is a prequel and you get to find out what happen to the colony and what happen to the Ishimura. There are noises coming from everywhere and the creatures called Necromorphs always find a way to sneak up and scare you enough to make you throw the controller in the air. While this is a rail shooter and not a 3rd person shooter it is a change that is good mostly and the game starts out right as the crew is just about to remove The Marker from the planet. The second they do the people in the colony start to lose their mind and vicious assaults start all over the planet.

To start off this is a very good companion to the Dead Space series. All of the things that made us love Dead Space is here. You never feel safe at any time anywhere and things seem to come out of nowhere and attack you. The game constantly changes the pace, you are slowly looking around every corner and then, fast pace wave after wave of Necromorphs are attacking. Gameplay also changes with puzzles but sometimes the game splits the screen and you have to solve the puzzle on one side and shoot on the other. It is fun, challenging and mixes things up, you are never boarded and always ready for the next assault.

The weapons have great balance so it does not matter what gun you find, it will work for any of the levels. You don’t buy anything you have to find things and grab them with the Kinesis module. You use this module to pick up everything near or far. Weapons, Weapon power ups, life packs and story files are hidden all over the place and sometimes you miss them and need to go back and try again. You also get the stasis module to slow down your foes. You do end up on the Ishimura and meet Nicole Brennan Isaac girlfriend from the first Dead Space. You also get to find out how things on the ship end up the way they did. Why is the cannon turned off, why is there a barricade here? Many of the questions from the first Dead Space game get answered in Extraction.

The problems are minor like too many of the power ups look the same as the lights in the background. You are trying to grab some ammo and it turns out to be a hallway light. The game has you reading a lot of stuff instead of using voice talent reading it to you and the game only has three boss battles. They are just OK they are not as much fun as the other Dead Space bosses. We also would have like to have seen a little more of Nicole Brennan story since she is the whole reason why Isaac went to the Ishimura in the first place.

The story, music, sound effect and voice acting are top of the line and the game looks great, nice to see the Ishimura in a different way. There are ten chapters to play and the game has a lot of replay value here. You also get ten challenge maps that get unlocked after you defeat each level. The game takes between 7 to 10 hours depend on your aim and you will want to keep trying to get all of the secret stuff. Plus there are times where you have to choose a path so you will want to replay to find out what’s down the other hallway.  It is worth the $15.00 on PSN but not the $40.00 for the Wii version (don’t know why the Wii version is that high). If you are lucky find a copy of Dead Space 2 Special Edition for the PS3, you get Dead Space Extraction for free, even used copies have this because the game is on the disk and it is not a code.
