Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles | May 1, 2013
Nintendo Wii, Wii U Compatible, PlayStation 3

For nostalgic Resident Evil fans, a game that starts in Resident Evil 0 and ends after Resident Evil 3 is a welcome sight in a rail shooter. Even though we had fun remembering these games original story lines retold with more information Resident Evil The Umbrella Chronicles fell short in a lot of ways. If you are a Resident Evil fan and you like rail shooters you will find something here worth playing, despite some of the short comings in the game mechanics.

We love when a game series does not ignore their roots. Seeing the train from Resident Evil 0, the mansion form Resident Evil and Raccoon City from Resident Evil 3 in a 1st person view does bring a new perspective to the game franchise. After going through the scenarios you start to unlock different story elements to play through. You get to find out what Ada Wong was up to while the Raccoon City outbreak was going on and you get to find out how Albert Wesker was involved from the beginning. Parts of the game start after Resident Evil 3, so you get to play some new stories not in any of the other games. Jill and Chris travel to Russia to investigate Umbrella’s finally try to put an in to the corporation. This fills in parts that happen before Resident Evil 4 since in that game the Umbrella Corporation is done and in huge legal trouble.

Resident Evil The Umbrella Chronicles had the potential to be great because of the Resident Evil name and there are not a lot of rail shooters to play. First many of the guns take way too long to reload and you are always running out of ammo. Rail shooters should not have a ammo and reloading problem since that is the entire game play element. The worst part is that there is no aiming calibration option in the Wii version so trying to hit your target is harder than it needs to be. It took us a little under 10 hours to play through the first time and replay value is about average. The aiming issue is not a problem on the PlayStation Network version of the game however. Loved looking back at the early Resident Evil series but don’t spend more than $15.00 for the game. Sales happen often on the HD Chronicles for you PlayStation owners.
