Sonic the Hedgehog Review | January 23, 2015
Xbox, Windows, iOS, Android, Nintendo

Sonic the Hedgehog is a 2D side scrolling platformer where speed is the key. This was a Sega Genesis exclusive when it was released in 1991 and it was a huge success driving sales of the Genesis and even out pacing the Super Nintendo at times in the second great console war. Sonic was Mario’s equal  through the early to mid-1990’s. Sega needed a mascot to represent their company and Sonic the Hedgehog was their answers. He was market as a rebel who did not listen when he was told to slow down. Dr. Robotnik and evil scientist has kidnapped animals and imprisoned them in robots. He has also stolen the Chaos Emeralds, powerful stones that he can use to power up his weapons and giant robots to use against Sonic and his friends.

If your first interaction with Sonic the Hedgehog was after 1995 we are so sorry. With so many really terrible games that have been attached to the Sonic name for so long it is hard to remember how great this series once was. How fast the gameplay is will catch you off guard for all first time players. Even now picking up the first Sonic the Hedgehog video game and just running as fast as you can to the end of a level is surprising. There is also several different paths you can take to get to the end. This was also something that was not done very much at the time when Sonic the Hedgehog was release. Rumors have said that some did not want the game to be this fast. Why spend all of this time designing a game with several paths and look so good if people are just going to miss it all. But, the fast pace was the best part of what Sega and Sonic had to offer.

It still took us almost 2 hours to get through. Some of the later levels require you to have so fast controller skills. Being able to save when you want helps but this feature varies depending on what system you are playing the game. Remember keep a golden ring. As longs as you have at least one you can take a hit. Some of the boss battles are still just as much fun as we remembered and some still drove us crazy. We also like that there is no time limit on levels. So if you want to take you time and get every gold ring and explore each area you can. Sonic the Hedgehog is easily worth paying under $5 for and that price is what it is going for on most systems. It also has a very high replay value. You can just decide to play a level and then save and put the game down and then play some more later. We love that Mario and Rayman have embraced their roots and have been creating great games in the 2D platforming style. We only wish that Sega and Sonic would start to do the same, that is what gamers want!
