DuckTales Remastered | December 7, 2013
Xbox, Windows, iOS, Android, PlayStation, Nintendo

Excitement is the word we used when we found out that DuckTales the video game was getting an update. The game was first put on the NES back in 1989. The action 2D platformer is one of the first games to fix gameplay mechanics issues back during the early Nintendo days. The controls were great, the story was good, it had a very high replay value, several different endings and it was just fun the whole time. We were worried that this would be just another terrible HD remake of a game we loved but DuckTales Remastered finds a way to be everything that we remembered and is just as much fun in HD. We only wished the game was longer. Very few games got the 2D platforming formula right during the late 80’s early 90’s. Super Mario Bros and Sonic the Hedgehog are the best known but DuckTales was just as good. You get to once again play as Scrooge McDuck as he looks to increase his wealth. Scrooge is not alone all of the regulars return. His nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie are here to quote from the “Junior Woodchuck Guidebook and of course Webbigail "Webby" Vanderquack, Mrs. Beakley, Bubba Duck and a favorite Gismo Duck are all here helping Scrooge on his way. Even many of the original voice actors return lead by Alan Young who plays Scrooge.

DuckTales starts off with The Beagle Boys breaking into Scrooge’s vault and trapping his nephews, but they don’t steal the most valuable stuff they try to take something that Scrooge thinks is worthless. He finds a secret map that they were looking for that leads to five great treasures hidden in the Diamond mines in Africa, deep in the jungle of the Amazon, on top of the mountains in the Himalayas, a castle in Transylvania and of course on the moon. There is a total of seven levels to play through and the game is an almost an exact copy of the original with HD graphics. There are also a few hidden treasures in certain secret areas just like original game.

DuckTales is so much fun the whole time you are playing. You don’t want to stop and you want to keep exploring to find everything. It still has the same great feel of the original game and we forgot how much we miss Launchpad and Bubba Duck. The only real problem is that the game is really short. It took us between 4 and 5 hours to beat the game our first time through and that is including going everywhere and finding all of the secret areas. You could speed run through the game in less than 2 hours if you wanted to. There is plenty of replay, you will pick up the game and play a level here and there, plus there is stuff to buy with all of the gems you find (this was not a part of the NES version of the game). It made us laugh and we are sure that the music that plays when you defeat a level comes from old school Mega Man games which we also love. We just wish the game was longer and that they could have also included the original DuckTales game just for the fun of it. Don’t spend more than $15 because how short the game is. We loved it and DuckTales has replay value but it is hard to want to spend more than that on a 4 hour game.
