New Super Luigi U Review | September 7, 2013
Nintendo Wii U Exclusive Title

So what is the difference between New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros U? That is the question that we kept getting asked. With Nintendo putting a lot of effort into “The Summer of Luigi” and the brilliant return of classic 2D platforming side-scrolling games, the expectations were high. This game was first announced as a DLC for Super Mario Bros U. We were happy to see that the game can stand on its own and you can buy it without having to own Super Mario Bros U. Both games are so good we cannot find a reason not to own both if you have a Wii U. Luigi is a star on his own gamers!

Even though Super Luigi U has many similarities with the first Wii U Mario Bros game it is not a cheap rip-off where you are just buying the same game with Luigi as the main character. There are still nine worlds (eight regular and one hidden) and the overhead map looks the same as New Super Mario Wii U. There are over 80 levels to play and you can still use the gamepad, Wii Controller or Wii U pro controller. Each work perfectly just like the other game, it just a matter of what one you like best. The main different is that each level is shorter than New Super Mario Bros U. World 1-1 in Luigi’s game is a whole new level in the same style of Super Mario Bros U world 1-1, but you have less time to complete them. You only get 100 seconds to finish the level compared to 300 to 400 seconds in the Mario U game. This makes gameplay faster and getting the big giant super coins harder. Every single world is like this. A shorter, faster re-imagined level to play through 80 plus times in the Luigi game.

The boss battles are all different too and the end fight with Bowser and Bowser Jr. is of course over the top and excellent. The game looks outstanding in HD, the colors are bright and the detail in a 2D game with 3D elements shows how good the Wii U can be. This game is worth the money and it does not matter if you buy it as a download for $20 or the $30 it cost for a physical copy. This is a must have if you own a Wii U and if you buy this game first you will end up buying the New Super Mario Bros U game too because they are that fun.
