New Super Mario Bros. U Review | January 14, 2013
Nintendo Wii U Exclusive Title

There are three different ways Nintendo likes to use the Mario. First, there are the 3D style games like Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy. Then you have your spin offs like Super Smash Bros. and Mario Super Sluggers. Finally you get to the 2D platformers that started it all. New Super Mario U is yet another brilliant Mario game from Nintendo. If you love Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros 3 this game has to be in your Nintendo collection.

We all know the story “Bowser Bad Me Take Princess", "Mario Good Me Save Princess”. We honestly don’t know how they do it. Every Mario 2D game that we have played has been flawless. You can use the Wii Controller, Wii U Pro controller or the gamepad. We did notice that the gamepad takes some getting used to but after about 30 minutes of playing if felt natural. We had zero controller issues with either Wii Controller, Wii U Pro controller or the gamepad which was kind of surprising. We though one would be better that the other but it all depended on your personal preference or which had a fully charged batteries. This game is what we expected from Nintendo when they talked about the duel screen system. If you want to play on your TV it looks great and works well. If you want to play on the gamepad it still looks great and works well. Having been very disappointed with Nintendo Land we were a bit worried. You can play up to four players and then add a fifth in boost mode. Boost mode is like a time trial where there are four players on screen going through the level using a Wii Controller or Pro controller and the fifth is using the gamepad to create platforms for the other players to get to parts on the screen that they will need help with. This game is fun with one player or with a group of people, Nintendo did a great job and it does not matter what mode you are playing or how many players you have.

There are of course eight worlds to play through and if you find all the giant coins you unlock a secret world nine. The good news is that you really want to replay the levels over and over until you get secret world nine, it is not just pointless busy work. The final boss is just outstanding and we kept dying because of how great everything looked we weren’t paying attention that Bowser is trying to destroy us. We only have one problem with the game. In Super Mario Wii you could stock pile mushrooms, fire flowers and anything else you wanted. So if you were having trouble with a certain world you could get 99 lives and 99 mushrooms to make it easier. It is a small gripe but we did miss it. Once again Nintendo does an exceptional job of giving us what we want when it comes to Mario universe. The game is worth it at any price, already looking forward for the next 2D Mario adventure.
