Streets of Rage Review | April 7, 2016
Xbox, iOS, PlayStation, Nintendo

Streets of Rage is 2D side scrolling action beat ‘em up. It is in the same style as amazing arcade titles like Final Fight, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ninja Gaiden. But, Streets of Rage did not get its start in arcades, it was first released in 1991 from Sega and it was only on the Master System, Game Gear, Mega Drive and the Sega Genesis. Now it can be downloaded as a PC title or as part of other Sega collections. It is also part of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.  You can also find it in the Sega Vintage Collection Streets of Rage, which has all three games. Three ex-cops Adam, Axle and Blaze have quit the force because of corruption inside of the department. An unknown syndicate has taken over the city and now these three former cops are going to take the law into their own hands and put an end it.

Streets of Rage is look upon fondly by gamers. It was a major reason to get a Sega Genesis since it was an exclusive title. Streets of Rage was in direct response to Final Fight which was only available on the Super Nintendo at the time but later on you could get Final Fight for the Sega CD an add on to the Genesis. The games and the overall series are very similar. Even the box art for Streets of Rage and Final Fight look the same. We had fun remembering our Sega Genesis days but we found out quickly that the controls are a mess. The entire game there is this inability to catch some of the combatants on screen. You spend too much time trying to hit somebody who can just out run you. Also even on its easiest setting it is not that easy. When the weakest guy can take half your life with only three hits it loses if fun at times.

Streets of Rage took us between 1 and 2 hours to get through. The replay value is above average but only with conditions. We recommend playing it two player mode more than single player. We actually got all the way to the end in easy mode and still died and ran out of continues while fighting the final boss. We were not happy with the Game Over screen, this was not a problem in two player mode. There is also an option to get several endings when playing is two player mode. It not like any of the endings are in-depth with storytelling elements but it does add a little fun to the game. $3.00 is a good price for this game. If you get lucky and find it under $3.00 it is a MUST BUY PRICE!
